By Motor & Power Drive

  • BLDC (Brushless DC) Systems: Highly efficient (85–95%) for small-to-medium systems (0.5 HP to 5 HP). Connects to solar panels via a specialized DC pump controller, requiring no inverter.

  • AC Induction Systems: Driven by Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) or solar pump inverters that convert DC panel output to 3-phase AC electricity. Preferred for heavy-duty industrial or large agricultural applications (5 HP to 20+ HP).

  • Direct-Drive vs. Battery-Backed: Most agricultural solar pumps run direct-drive without batteries (storing water in an elevated storage tank instead of storing electricity in chemical batteries).

Key Sizing Factors

When selecting a solar pump system, consider three essential parameters:

  1. Total Dynamic Head (TDH): The vertical distance water must be lifted from the dynamic water level in the well to the discharge tank, plus pipe friction losses.

  2. Daily Water Demand ($Q$): Expressed in liters or gallons per day required for crops, livestock, or household use.

  3. Peak Sun Hours (PSH): Average daily effective solar radiation available at your geographic location (typically 4.5 to 6 hours/day).
